One of the highlights of a visit to Joshimath and Auli is a ride on the Joshimath-Auli ropeway. However, with the increasing tourist influx in recent years, getting a seat on the ropeway is becoming increasingly difficult, specially in the winters when heavy snow makes it difficult to drive to Auli by car. The problem was exacerbated by the fact that till last year there was no system for online booking of tickets nor for advance booking of seats. So there were numerous stories of tourists who had to waited in line since early morning in the freezing cold, only to be told that all tickets were sold out.
The fact is that the Auli ropeway has a limited carrying capacity. It is a 2 gondola system in which one gondola travels from Joshimath to Auli while simultaneously the other Travels down from Auli. During peak traffic the ropeway makes around 26 runs, carrying 25 passengers at a time. Thus we arrive at a maximum carrying capacity of 650 per day. The 2.5 km trip takes about 25 minutes and carries the passengers from a height of 1906m to 3106m along 10 steel towers.
Now we have good news. This year an online booking system has been introduced. Tourists can book the ropeway tickets online from the webpage https://heliservices.uk.gov.in/auliropeway.aspx
So now the need to stand in queue in the cold has been eliminated.
Note: The Auli-Joshimath ropeway has an interesting history which you can read from Here.
